FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
2. Do you think Tulibaha was being honest? Why or why not?
3. What is your opinion on Tulibaha’s apology?
4. What do the words mumbled and submit mean based on the context of
the text and your background knowledge?
Did you
know
In Activity 3 (a), you inferred the meaning. Inferring meaning is the process
of understanding information that is not directly stated using clues from the
context, background knowledge and logical reasoning. When you read, you
sometimes encounter words, ideas or emotions that are implied rather than
explicitly explained. To infer meaning, you must analyse hints such as tone,
actions, facial expressions, or surrounding words in a text. For example, if
the story says, “Neema shivered and pulled her coat tighter as she stepped
out of her house”, we can infer that the weather was cold, even though it is
not directly mentioned in the text.
Task
1. Read the following passage, paying attention to the words in boldface.
Ahmed stepped into the garden and noticed the ground was damp from
earlier rain. The air smelled of fragrant herbs like mint and lavender. As
he walked farther, he spotted a tall, massive oak tree in the middle of the
garden. He admired its broad branches, which provided much-needed
shade.
