(a) Read the four short stories below and answer the questions after each.
Story 1
Mariam sat in the cafeteria, staring at her empty lunch tray. She sighed and
rested her head on her hand as she watched her friends happily eating. When
her best friend Asha saw her, she swiftly broke her sandwich into halves
and handed it to Mariam without saying a word. Mariam smiled and took it
gratefully.

1. How was Mariam feeling? What clues tell you this?

Story 2
Juma lay in bed, his eyes wide open. The wind howled outside, and flashes
of light filled the room. He pulled his blanket up to his chin and squeezed his
eyes shut. Then, came a loud BOOM! Juma jumped and covered his ears. He
didn’t move until the storm began to quiet down.
