Constructing meanings
Introduction
Constructing meaning involves understanding and interpreting information.
It helps one to connect new ideas to what they already know. In this chapter,
you will compare ideas, generate and infer meanings of unfamiliar words from
a variety of texts and paraphrase textual information from multiple sources.
The competencies developed will enhance your confidence in using English,
making learning easy and more enjoyable.

Activity 1 Comparing ideas from various texts
(a) Identify the concepts that are different and those that are similar in the
following two stories. Use a diagram to compare them by placing the similarity
in the overlapping section.
Story 1
The lost kid in Enduleni
In Enduleni Village in Ngorongoro, a young warrior named Lorubare owned a little
white goat named Nailili. One day, Nailili disappeared in the wild when Lorubare was
grazing his father’s herd. At first, Lorubare didn’t notice the disappearance. After
