Textiles and Garment Construction

Type of fabric should also be
           considered when choosing tucks; for
instance, wider tucks can be made on
any kind of fabric but it is difficult
to make pin tucks on heavy fabrics.

Types of tucks: There are two major types
of tucks commonly used in constructing
garments as discussed in this section:
(iii) Tack and stitch on the folded edge.
           (a) Pin tucks Continue working in this way until
                                                            all tucks are completed.
Pin tucks are very narrow tucks with a
very thin width like a pinhead. The width
of the tuck would usually range from 1
to 3mm. It is used in light fabrics and is
suitable for blouses and lightweight dresses.

Procedures for working on pin tucks

           (i) Mark the position of each tuck on
a straight grain of the fabric using
                tacking stitches.
                                                      (b) Plain or wide tucks

Plain or wide tucks are wider than
the pin tucks with a width of 4mm
and above depending on the design
of the garment. They can be spaced
                                                            or un-spaced depending on the
                                                            desired effect.

Procedures for working on plain or wide
                                                      tucks

(ii) Fold the fabric on the straight Un-spaced tucks: For this type, the fold
grain to make the first tuck, tack of the first tuck sets a line for the stitching
and stitch on the edge. Using a of the second tuck such that they lie close
marker, measure and fold the fabric to each other.
under the notch for the next tuck.
                                                      (i) Mark the stitching lines of each tuck on
the side of the fabric that will be stitched.
