Procedure for working on self-casing (v) For casing that uses elastic, measure
the length of the elastic around the area
(i) Cut a piece of fabric. Fold 6mm where the casing is going to be applied,
along the top edge to the wrong side. subtract 5cm and cut the elastic.
(vi) Using a safety pin or a bodkin, insert
the elastic and thread it through the
casing until the end of casing.
(ii) Create a casing by the second folding
on the wrong side. The fold should be
5mm wider than the elastic or string.
(vii) Pin the ends of the elastic together
and stretch for several minutes to
check the fitness of casing. If it is too
loose, subtract 5-10cm depending on
how you want a fabric to fit.
(iii) Tack and stitch at the lower
casing edge while leaving a gap
for inserting the string or elastic
by ending the stitch 5cm before
the beginning of the first stitch.
(viii) After fitting pull out both ends of the
elastic, overlap the ends by 1.3 cm
and machine it together with repeated
(iv) Edge stitch around the top stitches to make them stronger.
of the folded edge to prevent
twisting of the string or elastic
to provide a neat finishing.
