6.1 Gas exchange in mammals
Teaching steps
1. Guide students to search from internet sources the simulations

of gas exchange in mammalian lungs. Ask them to note down
what they have observed.
2. Organise students in groups to explore the internal structure
of the mammalian lung and alveolus. Check whether students
participate actively in group discussion.
3. Guide students to search from internet sources the simulations
showing gas exchange in alveoli. Ask them to note down what
they have observed.
4. Use Activity 6.1 from the Student’s Book to guide students to
investigate the structure of the mammalian lungs.
Safety precautions
Laboratory rules and regulations should be adhered to.
Rat or mouse may bite and also their fur may cause allergy to
a human being.
5. Guide students to search from library and internet sources the
videos or images showing factors governing gas exchange on
the respiratory surface as well as oxygen and carbon dioxide
transport in vertebrates.
6. Organise students in groups to explore adaptation of organisms
to oxygen uptake (mountain climbers and dwellers, divers
and mammalian foetus). Check whether students participate
actively in group discussion.
7. Guide students to conduct a field visit to a health facility with
an oxygen concentrator or mechanical ventilator. Arrange for a
technician to inform or demonstrate how the equipment is used
