4.7 Extraction of oil from coconut and groundnuts

Teaching steps
1. Guide students to watch video showing the extraction of

coconut and groundnut oil.
2. Engage the students in interactive activities to discuss various
procedures for the extraction of coconut and groundnut
oils. Check whether students participate actively in group
discussion. Ask students to note what they have discussed.
3. Guide students to select good quality coconut and groundnuts
for oil extraction. Guide students to extract coconut and
groundnut oils by following procedures of their choice.

4. Assign students with more experimental works to equip them
with enough skills.
5. Instruct students to perform Activities 4.6 and 4.7 and
Exercises 4.4, and 4.5. Mark students’ works and make
clarification where necessary.

Note: Hand machine can be used in grounding roasted
groundnuts.

Safety precaution

Care should be observed when performing the following;
1. Using warm water and boiling coconut milk as it may
cause burning accident;
2. Breaking a coconut with hummer or mallet as it may
cause harm.
