              Safety precautions

Necessary precautions should be observed when using chemical
reagents for testing foods in the laboratory.

            4.3 Extraction of corn starch

            Teaching steps

                1. Guide students to view video or animations showing corn
starch extraction, and guide them to note what they have
                   observed.
                2. Assign students to extract corn starch from maize kernel.
Allow students to use various ways of preparing corn starch
as observed from watching videos or animations. Make
                   clarification where necessary.

                3. Facilitate students to view the structure of corn starch in
low and high magnification power of the microscope. Task
students to draw and describe the observed structures.
                4. Use question and answers or any other techniques for
students to describe the application of corn starch.
