(e) Fish Tapes A fish tape (Figure 3.45) is a flexible
wire, steel tape, or fibreglass rod used Chapter Three: Advanced Computer Networks

cable installation. In fibre networks,
a fiberglass pushrod is typically used

Cable-toning tool
A cable toner is a device that determines if the fundamental cable installation has
been done properly. The toner is a simple continuity tester that confirms that what is
connected at one end is electrically continuous to the other end. An electrical signal,
or tone, is injected on the circuit being tested and is either received and verified on
the other end or looped back for verification on the sending end.
Cable termination tools
Termination of the cable is done on patch panels, cross-connections by using wall
plates as shown in Table 3.12.

(a) Wall plate A wall plate show in Figure 3.46 is a
flat plastic or metal plate mounted on a
wall or surface, containing one or more
jacks. A jack in the wall plate allows a
workstation to connect to the network
cabling system

(b) Patch panel A patch panel as shown in Figure 3.47
connects individual wires to network
ports on the front, which can then link
to network equipment or other ports
with a patch cable. Patch panels are
cost-effective and offer great flexibility
for connecting workstations.
