Activity 3.11:
Straight-through cable
construction
Aim:
To build and test a functional
Ethernet patch cable, ensuring proper
construction and connectivity.
Materials:
Stranded Cat 5, 5e, or 6 UTP cable;
RJ-45 plugs; Crimping tool; Cable
stripper; Cable tester; Measuring tape;
and Wire cutters OR Computer and
Simulation software (Such as Cisco
Packet Tracer, GNS3)
Instructions
Use the following steps (1 to 10) to:
(a) Build: Construct a Category 5, 5e,
or 6 (CAT 5, 5e, or 6) Unshielded
Twisted Pair (UTP) Ethernet
network patch cable or patch cord.
(b) Test: Ensure the cable has continuity,
correct pinouts, and the correct wire
color on the right pin.
Step 1: Determine length
(a) Measure distance: Measure the
distance between devices or to the
plug, adding 30.48 cm (12 in.) for
flexibility.
(b) Ensure proper length: Ensure the
cable length does not exceed 3 m

(9.84 ft). Standard lengths are 1.83
m (6 ft) and 3.05 m (10 ft).
Step 2: Cut cable Chapter Three: Advanced Computer Networks
Cut to Length: Cut a piece of stranded
Cat UTP cable to the desired length.
Use stranded cable for patch cables as
it is more durable.
Step 3: Strip cable
Remove jacket: Strip 5.08 cm (2 in.)
of the jacket off one end of the cable.
Step 4: Organise pairs
Arrange Pairs: Arrange the twisted
pairs according to the T568-B wiring
standard, maintaining as much twist
as possible for noise cancellation.
Step 5: Reorder pairs
Match color scheme: Untwist and
reorder the green and blue pairs to
match the T568-B color scheme.
Continue with the remaining pairs.
Step 6: Prepare wires
Align wires: Flatten, straighten, and
align the wires. Trim them to 1.25 to
1.9 cm (1/2 to 3/4 in.) from the jacket.
Keep the jacket and wires in place to
minimize noise.
Step 7: Attach RJ-45 Plug
Insert plug: Place an RJ-45 plug on
the cable with the prong underside
and the orange pair on the left. Push
the plug until the copper ends are
visible through the plug.
