        FOR ONLINE READING ONLY

              Introduction
Interpreting especially simultaneous interpreting is a critical thinking skill
that entails orally transferring information from one language to another.
Understanding and translating overt and covert meanings of concepts from one
language to another requires mastery of language skills compounded with analysis
and evaluation skills. In this chapter, you will learn intralingual, interlingual
and sign language interpreting. You will also learn how to analyse theories and
principles of interpreting and discuss the ethics of interpreting. The competencies
developed will enable you to interact and comprehend concepts in diverse
communities, navigate multicultural environments and develop your interpreting
skills. In addition, you will also improve your capacity to promote mutual respect,
understanding and cooperation within your language community, across linguistic
and cultural boundaries and the globalised world.

                      Think about

                     1. the differences between interlingual and intralingual interpreting.
                     2. the strategies to bridge linguistic and cultural gaps, and the importance
                        of cultural competency in interpreting.
                     3. the role of facial expressions and body language in sign language
                        interpreting.
                     4. the difficulties in interpreting a concept or technical terminology
within the same language and the way to overcome them.

Activity 8.1 Differentiating intralingual, interlingua and sign language
                              interpreting
The term interpretation simply means an oral explanation of the meaning of expressions.
Many literature sources use the terms interpretation and translation interchangeably
but they refer to two different things. They should not be confused. Their distinction is
that translation entails conveying meanings of written content for readers to understand,
whereas interpretation involves conveying meanings of spoken content for the audience
          to understand.
