Intralingual, interlingual and sign language interpreting are three distinct modes
of language interpreting. The term intralingual interpretation refers to the
interpretation done within the same language. More precisely, it entails rewording
a spoken utterance in the same language or between accents/dialects of the
same language. Intralingual interpreting often focuses on clarifying complex or
specialised language or vocabulary for comprehension. This type of interpreting
is valuable in legal proceedings and medical settings where interpreters strive
to simplify technical language into plain language. Intralingual interpreting is
also practised in language teaching and learning, disability resource centres or
communicating with individuals with language barriers.
Activity 8.2 Practising intralingual interpreting
(a) Make intralingual interpretations of the following three expressions quoted from
the UN-2015 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Number 1 is provided as
an example.

rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom,
justice and peace in the world...”
