Theatre Arts for Advanced Secondary Schools
Created or found spaces
These are non-theatrical areas that have been converted into theatrical spaces.
In other words, a found space is any performance space that is used for theatre
productions but was not meant for such purpose. Found spaces are also called
created spaces. Examples of found spaces may include classrooms, churches,

warehouses, dining halls, bus stations and gymnasiums when used to stage theatre
performances. Created or found spaces are among the simplest stages in theatre.
Characteristics of created or found spaces
(a) They can either be indoor or outdoor. Some found spaces are in form of
buildings while others are located outdoors. Examples of outdoor found
spaces include marketplaces or playgrounds while indoor found spaces
are warehouses, garages such as Sanaa studio at the University of Dar es
salaam or dining halls in most of the Secondary schools.
(b) They can either be used as they are or after modification. Some found
spaces are used as they are while others are modified first before they are
used for theatrical productions.
(c) Space can be adapted to fit individual theatre productions. This is
possible through the nature of the space as most of the equipment can
be moved to allow formation of the stage that suits individual theatrical
performance needs. The movable equipment such as chairs, lights and
musical instruments are commonly brought to found spaces.
(d) Created or found spaces allow several activities to take place
simultaneously. Theatre performances can take place in different stages
at the same time, thereby allowing multifocus view of the audience.
This kind of stage resembles locally organized festivals in which several
performances can take place in several stages and the audience’s role is
that of moving from one stage to another to watch performances. Figure
3.12 shows a sketch of a multifocus found space.
