Theatre Arts for Advanced Secondary Schools

                (d) Performers work in absence of rules: The rules for working in found space
are not as strict as those of proscenium and thrust stage. While owners of
proscenium stages tend to set time for using their venues, this may not
necessarily be the case in found spaces where performers experience a
sense of freedom while using the spaces.

            Disadvantages of found spaces
Although the found spaces have less restrictions, the following are some of
the challenges theatre performers may encounter when using found spaces as
            performance areas.
                (a) They do not allow complex settings. Since found spaces are not used for
one purpose, it is a challenge to use them for performance that needs
complex settings. For example, if the stage is needed on immediate basis,
the stage managers may fail to return the stage on time. It is difficult for
stage managers to dismantle the already used stage because it takes time.

                (b) They have high level of interference. Since found spaces are multipurpose
in nature, the performances and other activities can take place
simultaneously. Examples of such performances are those that take
place in restaurants and nightclubs or bars. This may lead to noticeable
inefficiency, unlike in cases where the performances take place in spaces
                    specifically designed for theatrical performances.

                (c) Security is limited: Most of the found spaces are located in public
spaces like roadsides, marketplaces and nightclubs. These areas may not
guarantee security to both performers and audience.

                (d) Their use for performance is not guaranteed: The owners of the spaces
may decide to change their use any time they wish. The decision may affect
performers and their viewers in many ways. For example, transformation
may affect performers in terms of income and viewership.

                      Activity 3.2

Visit any open space where a traditional dance performance is taking place.
Observe the relationship between performers and audience in terms of
where they perform from or stand. State whether the stage allows or restricts
               performers and audience to intermingle.
