            Black box stage
This is a simple performance space that resemble a square room. Originally,
the walls, chairs and carpet are all black. Everything in this stage is temporarily
placed. They can be moved and configured into a variety of arrangements based
on the nature of the performance. A black box stage is also called a flexible stage,

because it allows performers to switch stages on the basis of their needs and those
of the audience. The flexibility allows the stage to be transformed into different
stage types such as proscenium, thrust stage and arena stage. Figure 3.13 shows
            a black box stage.

            Characteristics of black box stage

                (a) It provides maximum flexibility. The stage is considered flexible because
its chairs are movable and can be rearranged to fit the demand of any
                    performance.

                (b) Everything is black: Originally seats, ceiling and floor were all painted
black. However, blackness is not the only feature of black box stage. It
can be painted otherwise. Figure 3.14 shows black box in other colours.
