Introduction
Performing techniques are almost the same across theatre discipline,
yet some are field specific. In this chapter, you will learn the concept of
performance, performing approaches, performing for stage, radio and
screen, tools of a performer, differences between acting for film and
television, differences between performing for stage and screen and
challenges of performing for screen, stage and radio. The competencies
developed will enable you to demonstrate mastery of performing theatrical
works for stage, radio and screen and consequently build a career in acting
and therefore create opportunities to generate income.

The concept of performance
Performing is the ability to express life experiences through enactment that
employs words, movements and gestures to portray a character. It also refers to
the act of presenting an organised sequence of artistic activities in such a way they
tell a story. Professional and non-professional performers look for opportunities
available in performance field for fun and for living. Performers demonstrate
their performing talents based on specific medium such as radio, screen or stage.
Performers grow differently while acquiring skills demanded by respective
performance medium of their choice. Performing for stage, radio and screen, for
example, is different when compared to performing for wrestling, military parade,
choir or beauty contest. The reason is that performers who perform for stage, radio
and screen require a variety of techniques to assume a character they perform for
each specific medium. It is also important to note that the performing is rooted in the
adoption of otherness and oneself, a duality that is essential to the art of performing
