Upstage
This is an area of the stage, which is far away from the audience. In this case, the
performers can do things which the audience cannot see easily. It is the farthest
kind of stage from the audience. Upstage is divided into three parts, namely
upstage right, upstage centre and upstage left.
Upstage right: This is an area away from the audience located on the right side of
the performer. It is a weak part of the stage. It is called weak because the audience
do not pay much attention to what is performed at this part of the stage.
Upstage centre: This is an area located at the centre away from the audience.
It is a weak part of the stage because the audience do not pay attention to the
performance during the performance.
Upstage left: This is an area away from the audience usually located on the left
side of the stage. It is also known as a weak part of the stage because it is a place
that the audience’s eyes see least. If the directors want an actor to sneak into the
stage, they will use this part. It is in this part of the stage that performers enter the
stage almost unnoticed.
