           Clipping/Truncation
           Teaching and Learning Procedures
The following procedures may be considered in teaching the clipping
           process:
           1. Guide students through discussing what clipping and truncation
are. Let them engage in the introduction by making reference to
the notes they created in Activity 1.1.
           2. Provide examples of clipped words to assist explain the concept.
Begin with simple and easily identifiable phrases such as “ad”
(advertisement), “info” (information), or “exam” (examination).
Explain how these words were derived by removing a piece of the
               original word.
           3. Provide students with a collection of clipped keywords and ask the
students to identify the original words. Discuss the definitions of
the clipped and original words. This enables students to perceive
the connection between the two and better understand the clipping
               process.
           4. Teach students to classify clipped words based on the part of the
term omitted. For example, talk about how some clipped words lose
their beginning or end, while others lose syllables. Give samples for
each category and ask the students to find the original terms in them.
           5. Encourage students to brainstorm and create lists of eliminated
phrases. Give them a topic or category (e.g., technology, slang,
sports) and instruct them to create as many clipped words as possible
               within that area.
           6. Engage students in word formation exercises using clipped words.
Give them a list of full words and ask them to create clipped terms
by removing a section of the word. For example, give them the
word “television” and ask them to create the abbreviation “TV.”
