Crafting meaning Academic Communication for Advanced Secondary Schools

Exercise 19 in the Student’s Book

             (a) Instruct students to do the exercise in pairs/groups. Inform them
to use online/offline sources to read and answer the question
                  given in their text book.
           FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
             (b) Answers from students are expected to consider and highlight
                  the following:
                  i. Online platforms provide a space for users to interact and
communicate in real-time, allowing for the rapid sharing
                     of language innovations.
ii. Users of these platforms often come up with shortened
versions of words or phrases, known as clipped words, to
convey their message more quickly and concisely.
iii. These clipped words spread through online platforms and
eventually make their way into everyday speech.
             (c) Let students present their works for discussion and knowledge
                  sharing.
             (d) Check on the correctness of students answers and provide
clarification and correct their works where needed.
