The concept of mankind being created in God’s image
The concept of mankind being created ‘in the image of God’ has its roots in Genesis
1:26-27, wherein “God created man in his own image…” This scriptural passage
does not mean that God is in human form, but rather, that humans are in the image
of God in their moral, spiritual, and intellectual nature.

In the Bible, God can be sad, hurt, angry or joyful – the same emotions that human
beings have. We make choices and decisions every day. God also makes choices
and decisions. Human beings were created with unique abilities embodied from God
who is the source of what we are. Essentially, the idea of being created in the image
of God involves the following points:
Intellect: God is intellect (God is intellectual Being) while man has intellect. Therefore,
man participates in God’s intellect. No other creature has intellect except human
being. Intellect is the faculty of reasoning and understanding objectively, especially
with regard to abstract matters. The human mind is always searching for truth.
Conscious: Consciousness is the state of being aware of and responsive to one’s
surroundings. Awareness is an activity of the mind. To be aware is to be able to follow
God’s conscience where man responds through prayers and good acts.
Will power: Will power is an ability to control one’s own thoughts, actions, and
emotions. This ability is granted only to human beings.
Free Will: Free will is the capacity of human beings to make choices and decisions.
Subjectively, human decisions are made based on experiences, freedom, and choices.
Human choices are determined by two fundamental principles of life, that is: what
is right and what is wrong. When one chooses good or right, he/she chooses God.
Subdue: Subduing is the act of bringing things under control. The human being has
been given this power by God to control God’s creatures. This power is entrusted
only to human kind.
Speak: Speaking is an act of conveying information (verbal expression) or expressing
one’s feelings in speech. Animals do not have that capacity. Only humankind can
communicate feelings or thoughts by speaking. Speaking is a special gift granted
to human beings.
