Marriage is essentially God’s plan as we read from Genesis 2:18-24. True marriage
is between man and woman. God commands man and woman to leave their parents,
and become husband and wife. They are united to be one body. Marriage is a holy
union. God instituted it in the garden of Eden with our first parents, Adam and Eve.
Furthermore, marriage is a permanent union and the married people are expected to

stay together until death, in marriage there is no room for divorce.

Commitment: Is a state of being dedicated to someone (Genesis 4:24, Ecclesiastes
9:9, Mark 10:9, Ephesians 5:22,33). In marriage, both wife and husband are dedicated
to each other in mutual love. Their planning and decision-making are done in a
commitment manner for the sake of their family. In marriage, commitment means to

keep on loving and treating the partner with respect and dignity.

Procreation: Although the primary purpose of marriage is companionship, procreation
comes second and is equally essential for a healthy family. In marriage, companionship
and procreation are tightly linked. According to the Bible, marriage is for bearing and
raising children. Children are a gift from God. In Africa, bearing children is more

valuable in the sense that children are a gift from God, and blessings to the parents
and community at large. (Genesisi 1:28).

Permanence: Marriage is permanent (Matthew 19:6). Marriage is for life. Only death
shall dissolve marriage (Romans.7:2). There is no room for divorce.

Practical love: Marriage requires practical love rather than feelings and passions.
Both wife and husband have to show charity to each other.

Living symbol of Christ: Marriage is a living symbol of unconditional love of Christ and

            the Church (Ephesians 5:23-32).

Honourable: Marriage is good and honourable (Hebrew 13:4). Marriage is a bond
            of trust, faithfulness, and relationship.
