Characteristics of a simple melody
(a) It has a simple melodic motif.
(b) It consists of a logical progression of tones and rhythms.
(c) It contains phrases A and B.
(d) It moves mainly in steps from one note to the one adjacent to it. This makes
it easier to sing or play.
(e) It has a simple rhythm.
Activity 4.1
Compose a four-bar melody by considering the following hints:
(a) Use the bass staff.
(b) Use the key of C major.
(c) Use a four-four time.
(d) Use minims, crotchets, quavers and semiquavers.
(e) Begin and end your melody on the first note of key C major.

(a) Sing the following melody using solfa syllables.
