(b) Breathe in quickly but deeply through the nose; breathe out slowly
through tightened lips for as long as possible. Remember to maintain
good posture throughout the exercise. Repeat the exercise as much as
you want.
(b) Warm-up exercises: These exercises are always done before singing in order
to warm up the vocal cords and relax the muscles involved in singing. They
include exercises such as soft humming, lip rolls and others.
Activity 6.5
Practise the following exercise to warm-up your vocal cords:
Through the following scale, hum or produce the “mmmm” sound. Gradually and
smoothly move up and down the scale while maintaining the humming (“mmmm”
sound). Start at your own comfortable tempo and pitch. Change to higher or
lower pitches as much as you want.
Activity 6.6
Practise the following exercise to warm-up your vocal cords:
(a) Place your index fingers lightly on each cheek, just outside the corners of
your mouth. Create a lip roll by blowing air through your slightly tightened
lips. Imagine imitating the sound of a motorcycle.
(b) Gradually move the pitch of the lip roll upward and downward following
the scale in Activity 6.5.
