Activity 6.11
(a) Read books from the library or materials from the internet. Then, identify
two societies from Tanzania and note the names given to their ngoma
(drums) and their social functions.
(b) Visit any elder in your society and ask the following questions:
(i) What are the types of ngoma used by that particular society?
(ii) What is the name of each ngoma?
(iii) What does each ngoma symbolise?

Caring for and handling the ngoma
Like any other musical instrument, ngoma needs good handling and care. The
following are some important hints to consider when caring and handling ngoma.
(a) Keep the ngoma covered, face up, or hanging on a wall in a warm, dry
place. Do not lay your ngoma on its face on the surface.
(b) Do not leave the instrument in extreme temperatures, as this can dry out the
