Generally, keeping the field clean helps to reduce the most common diseases in
pigeon peas. Healthy seeds and well-spaced planting improve air movement and
crop strength. Practising crop rotation of pigeon peas with other crops helps to
minimise the disease build-up in the soil. Regular field checks help to detect the
disease early. Taking quick action reduces crop losses and increases final yield.

               Activity 8.7
              1. Visit a pigeon pea field in your school or some nearby fields and do the
                  following:

                 (a) Check for signs and symptoms of pest or disease attacks on leaves, stems,
                      flowers, or pods.

                 (b) Try to identify the pest or disease based on what you observed.
                 (c) Suggest suitable control methods for the observed infestation.

                 (d) Apply one or more of the control methods where possible.

              2. Record your findings, actions, and lessons learnt in your portfolio.
