Chapter Three
FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
Reading for comprehension
Introduction
Reading for comprehension involves understanding, interpreting, and
analysing a text while identifying key ideas, details, and the author’s message.
It is essential for improving vocabulary, grammar, and overall language
proficiency and enhancing critical thinking and problem-solving skills
necessary for academic success and effective communication in real life. In
this chapter, you will distinguish facts from opinions, express connotative
meaning, and paraphrase texts. The competencies developed will increase
your confidence in using English inside and outside the classroom.
Think about:
how life would be without reading.
Activity 1 Distinguishing facts from opinions within a given text
(a) Look up the words ‘fact’ and ‘opinion’ in your dictionary. Then, play a ‘Fact
or Opinion game’ to distinguish facts from opinions about gender equity and
equality in the given statements, as instructed by the teacher.
(Note: Statements that can be verified scientifically are called facts. By contrast,
statements that are based on what people think or believe are called opinions.)
