Dialogues are conversations between two or more people over a specific issue,
idea or problem. In a dialogue, participants take turns by allowing one person
to speak at a time. Turn-taking gives interlocutors an opportunity to listen to
each other’s opinions.
Opinions in impromptu speeches
(a) To make yourself conversant with impromptu speeches, answer the following
questions:
1. What do you think an impromptu speech looks like?
2. In what situations does an impromptu speech occur?
3. Why is mastering impromptu speech an important skill?
4. Have you ever delivered an impromptu speech? If yes, where was it and
how did it happen?
(b) A teacher entered a classroom and asked one of the students to make a speech
on the importance of sleeping. Read the speech aloud as other students are
listening:
Good morning, my friends!
Every creature needs to rest. Giraffes, elephants, babies, dogs, cats,
grandparents, fathers, mothers, and hippos in the bush – all sleep! Just like
eating, sleeping is necessary for the survival of animals and human beings.
Sleeping gives our body a rest and allows it to prepare for the next day. It is
like giving the body a mini-vacation. Sleeping also gives our brain a chance
to sort things out and reflect on the day. Experience shows that if you don’t
