Carnage on roads
“Carnage on roads caused by accidents must be stopped,” remarked the Regional
Traffic Officer during the opening of Road Safety Week. Due to the fact that
thousands of drivers, passengers, and pedestrians lose their lives or suffer severe
injuries each year because of road accidents. This issue requires urgent attention.
According to Traffic Police Officers, overspeeding and reckless driving are major
contributors to road accidents. These behaviours significantly endanger other road
users. Measures such as deploying officers with speed-monitoring cameras and
installing speed governors on buses have been implemented to curb the problem.
Drivers argue that overspeeding and reckless driving cause accidents, but poor
and broken roads cause more accidents. The truth is that some tarmac roads in
Tanzania are poorly constructed and not regularly maintained. Therefore, potholes
and unnecessary traffic barriers lead to vehicle breakdowns and accidents.
Passengers, however, do not fully support the drivers’ claims. They believe some
accidents occur because drivers operate under the influence of alcohol, which
significantly increases risks. Furthermore, defective and unroadworthy vehicles are
another critical factor.
