Activity 3.5 Preparing speeches on various topics
Use the activities in the Student’s Book to guide the students through:
(a) Discussing the questions provided. Ask the students whether
they have ever delivered a speech. Let them share what they
did to prepare and deliver it. Lead a brainstorming session
and then a whole classroom discussion on preparing for a
speech. After the discussion, use the ‘Did you know’ section
and other resources to teach the students about effective
speech preparation and delivery.
(b) Reading the stages of making a speech in Activity 3.6(b).
Ask them to read the text in groups then summarise
what they have read and present it in the class. Listen to
their summaries to check their understanding of the text
provided
(c) Identifying the main ideas of the text they have read. Ask
them to share their work with the class. Lead the discussion
on which are the main ideas and ask them to use the
ideas they have identified to write a speech on a topic of
their choice. Use the ‘Did you know?’ section and other
resources to enhance student’s knowledge of the importance
of rehearsing and familiarising themselves with the venue
and equipment before delivering the speech.
