Activity 3.7 Writing an article for media, newspaper, and
magazine
Use the activities in the Student’s Book to guide the students through:

(a) Studying the excerpt extracted from The Guardian, a Tanzanian
newspaper. Ask them to pay attention to the highlighted text
and those pointed by the arrows and share their thoughts on
them. Lead a discussion on the components of the excerpt.
Explain the importance of each component.
(b) Collecting five English newspaper articles from Tanzanian
newspapers. This should be given earlier so that students
will have time to do this assignment. Instruct them to use the
components provided in the Student Book to compare how
their writers have successfully used them. Ask a few students
to present their work and use those as a base for discussion.
(c) Writing one newspaper or magazine article on any topic of
their interests. Lead a discussion on how successfully they
have delivered the intended messages. Use the ‘Did you know’
section and other sources to discuss further how publications
have their distinctive style and form of writing. That will further
enable students to develop skills in article writing.
Activity 3.8 Writing a journal article
Use the activities in the Student’s Book to guide the students through:
(a) Reading from different sources and writing procedures for
writing a journal article. This will require the students to
use online sources. You need to provide them with time and
resources to work on this activity.
