effectively. Ask them to do this activity in groups and share
what they have read in the class. Clarify any query arising
from the discussions.
(b) Describing how inappropriate dress of the speaker, overcrowded
venue, a speaker who is not confident, unprepared speaker, and
inappropriate choice of words can affect one’s understanding
of a speech. Ask them to brainstorm this in groups, then share
it in the class. Lead a class discussion where all five (5) items
are thoroughly explored.
(c) Consulting different sources to identify other factors affecting
one’s understanding of a speech, apart from those described
in the text. Instruct the students to sit in pairs and share their
thoughts on the aforementioned factors. Then, ask them to
share their work with the rest of the class. Lead a discussion
where students will come up with a common understanding of
the factors.
(d) Explaining why some speakers dislike questions in their
presentations. You may try out role playing some of the questions
that they think may annoy a speaker during presentations. Lead
a discussion on the advice they would give to such speakers.
(e) Using the knowledge gained from the text on delivering
speeches to individually select good topics. Then ask them to
collect and organise information using various sources. Then
instruct them to write speeches on the selected topics. Ask them
to rehearse the speeches they have prepared. Then, deliver
their speeches before the class. Allow a discussion after each
speech ensuring that the factors have been included in the
presentations.
