Activity 6.2 Applying pronunciation techniques in spontaneous
and non-spontaneous conversations
Use the activities in the Student’s Book to guide the students through:

(a) Responding to the three scenarios provided in the Student’s
Book. Lead a discussion on the students’ responses
(b) Reading the conversation between Sofia and Alex demonstrates
the application of pronunciation techniques in spontaneous and
non-spontaneous conversations. Then, use the ‘Did you know?’
section and other resources to teach students techniques that will
assist them in enhancing their pronunciation in spontaneous and
non-spontaneous conversational contexts.
(c) Responding to the four questions asked regarding Barack
Obama’s 2009 or 2013, the President of the United States of
America in 2009 or 2013 in his inaugural speech. Play back the
recorded speech and ask the students to focus on pronunciation,
intonation and rhythm by doing the following:
1. Focus on specific sounds that non-native speakers may find
challenging.
2. Practise the correct stress patterns in particular words and
sentences.
3. Observe the rise and fall of pitch (intonation) in selected
sentences to convey meaning, mood and emphasis.
4. Practise pronouncing some words from any other speech
of their choice.
(d) Recording themselves imitating a BBC news anchor. Then, ask
them to play their recordings, as they listen to them compare one
another’s pronunciation. Ask them to use the guide questions
provided in the Student’s Book to make the comparison.
(e) Using online tools such as Apps and videos to practise
pronunciation by performing pronunciation drills. Follow the
following guidelines:
