           DID YOU ?
              KNOW

In complex oral texts, meaning depends on the comprehension of the text. Despite
understanding the vocabulary and grammar, meaning in oral communication
depends much on the use of prosodic features of intonation, stress, rhythm, pause,
pitch range, chunking and loudness. These features facilitate comprehension and
differentiate the types and purposes of oral texts.

          (j) Listen to speeches in the following contexts and describe the use of prosodic
features and grammar in each context.
                 1. A teacher teaching in the classroom
                 2. A Headmaster/Headmistress warning students at the assembly ground
against an emerging unacceptable behaviour in the school

                 3. The Headmaster/Headmistress or anybody else speaking to congratulate
                    students on their achievement

                 4. A person complaining of unfair treatment
