KNOW
Complex oral texts have common as well as different features depending on the
purpose of communication and the discipline to which they belong. Their differences
are observed in the use of prosodic features and grammar. A text is traditionally
considered to be a written or printed material that conveys a message using words.
However, in academics, a text is associated with both written and spoken forms in
which language can be used to communicate ideas. In certain contexts, a text can
be signed when the message conveyed is coded in sign language. While a simple
text is determined by the completion of the intended message, a complex text is
determined by the increasing difficulty, richness, diversity, length and challenge in
the conveyed message.
(d) Write a paragraph for each of the following factors describing how each factor
contributes to the complexity of a text.
1. Increasing the level of difficulty in a text
2. High challenge to readers or listeners
3. Diverse content areas
4. Length of the text
(e) Differentiate the following:
1. A simple word and a complex word
2. A simple phrase and a complex phrase
3. A simple sentence and a complex sentence
