comedy and different forms of storytelling. In all these forms, performers and
audience recognise the presence of each other. Performers’ use of language,
their gestures, facial expression and postures and other aspects of body language

Activity 4.3
1. Attend Stand-up comedy and any other stage performance. Observe
closely each performance you have attended and list the major differences
between the performances.
2. Identify a traditional performance from your community. Observe the
performance and note down its performing approach.
Representational approach
Representational performance is an art of depicting life on stage through
characters, set, costumes and props. It is also known as an indirect approach.
Representational performance has its own roots in realism and naturalism
movements. It is a way of seeing ourselves on stage through actors and actresses
when enacting human experiences in front of audience. To portray human
experiences, performers use various techniques largely actions, movements and
language to communicate the message. The difference between presentational
