(iii) Getting into character: Performing for screen requires performers’
prompt change in character appearance and attitude. Performers face the
difficulty of getting into character when scenes are recorded in random
which is a norm in shooting films and television drama. Most of the time,
scenes are filmed based on production schedule or plan challenging screen

performers to realise not only where in the story the scene takes place
but also the projected emotions of the characters they are impersonating.
Again, performers for the stage do not experience this challenge since the
scenes of a stage performance flow in a given order.

                Revision exercise 4

              1. One of the popular film actors at your town considers performing
techniques the same as any media be it radio, film and television. Give at
least four differences between the performance for stage and performance
for television or screen to the actor to help him do well in his interview.
              2. A Bongo Movie director has become interested to learn more about
internal performing techniques after your recent talk with her at which you
mentioned the concept. Briefly explain at least three internal techniques
in the context of performance to help her better understand the concept.

              3. Tegemeo, your discussion group member, gets so lost when one talks
about Stanislavski’s “the magic if” technique in the performance. In
simple terms and with examples, describe the technique to your friend.

              4. A group of performers who are rehearsing for their new play, Tikisa, at
your school compound has approached you to orient to them some basic
acting skills, including external techniques. Prepare a talk that details
how a performer can apply external techniques during the performance.
              5. Your teacher is pleased with your understanding of performer’s tools
and has asked you to prepare a presentation for visiting students at your
school who would like to build their performing careers. Prepare your
presentation outlining the tools and their application when performing.
Prepare your presentation, as your outline the tools and their application
                  in the stage performance.

              6. When training Bega kwa Bega Sanaa group, one trainee has asked if you
have ever heard of physical theatre. Respond to the trainee by briefly
describing the concept of physical theatre.
