Theatre Arts for Advanced Secondary Schools

                (a) Creative vision, style and experimentation: Freedom of expression allows
theatre artists to completely realise their creative visions without external
interference. It enables them to explore unusual ideas, experiment with
different styles and techniques and express their unique views freely.

                (b) Social critique and commentary: Theatre serves as a platform for social
critique and commentary. Freedom of expression empowers theatre artists
to address pressing social issues, challenge prevailing norms affecting
lives of the people and provoke thought and discussion on various topics
among audiences without fear of government hand. Through their work,
theatre artists can shed light on injustice, inequality and other societal
concerns which consequently contribute to public awareness about issues
affecting lives towards fostering positive change.

                (c) Increased confidence: When theatre artists have freedom of speech, it may
lead to increased confidence among artists and thus foster cooperation
among them, thereby promoting growth. This is because artists may feel
appreciated in their working environment as well as their contribution to
                    different aspects of development.

Challenges of exercising freedom of expression
Practising freedom of expression is vital to the artists since it gives theatre artists a
sense of autonomy and sovereignty in executing their artistic duties. Nonetheless,
such a freedom is practised not without a cost. It may result into reputational
injury and defamation claims arising from exercising the right to freedom of
expression. The following are some of the challenges theatre artists may face
resulting from exercising their right to express themselves freely.
                (a) It may lead into legal liability: This is particularly the case if the freedom
of expression has damaged or tempered with someone’s dignity or image.
Appropriate measures may be taken against the artists.

                (b) Censorship: Artists often face censorship from governments, institutions,
or societal norms that seek to control their freedom of expression.
Governments can use laws and regulations due to fear of repercussions of
giving artists too much freedom may be.

                (c) Social criticism: Artists may face criticism from audiences, communities
or interest groups who disagree with or feel offended by their work. This
