Rights of a theatre artist
Rights are reasonable claims of persons. Rights can also be defined as something
that is considered just, fair and acceptable within a society, often serving as
a foundation for legal systems and social contracts. Rights are also known as
entitlements or permissions granted to individuals or groups that allow them to act

or behave in certain ways without interference or obstruction. These can include
legal, moral, or ethical entitlements that protect individuals’ freedom, well-being
and dignity. The rights of theatre artists involve various aspects put in place to
protect theatre artists’ interests, safety, creative expression and fair treatment. The
concept of rights forms the basis of many legal and political systems around the
world, serving as the foundation for justice, equality and protection of individuals
and collective interests. The following are rights typically associated with theatre
artists:

Freedom of expression
Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right that encompasses the ability
of individuals, including artists, to express their thoughts, ideas and artistic
creations without censorship or restraint from authorities or societal pressures.
Theatre artists as other artists, have the right to express themselves freely through
their performances. This applies to all theatre artists whether they are actors or
actresses, directors, playwrights or designers. Theatre artists serve as a medium for
exploring and expressing challenges within a society. The way they can practise
their freedom of expression may vary depending on social, cultural and political
context. Freedom of expression is vital since it enables theatre artists to address
sensitive or controversial topics, challenge the prevailing norms, principles
and beliefs about life. Freedom of expression gives power to artists to engage
with audiences in thought-provoking discussions without fear of being jailed or
detained. Theatre has long served as a platform for addressing sensitive issues
facing the society, criticising political matters and exploring complex problems
facing people in the society. Freedom of expression gives theatre artists power to
fulfil this critical role as agents of change and reflection in society.
