Five of a theatre artist
FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
Introduction
It is essential for theatre artists to be aware of their rights and
responsibilities. In this chapter, you will learn different types of artists that
work as theatre artists, rights and responsibilities of theatre artists, ethical
issues in theatrical production, and the mise-en-scene and the regulatory
institutions that deal with the rights and responsibilities of theatre artists.
The competences developed will enable you to effectively communicate with
theatre stakeholders, audiences and fellow artists on matters pertaining
to rights and responsibilities. The competencies will also make you enjoy
your rights and act responsibly as you execute your artistic duties.
Think about honesty and respect on and off the stage.
Theatre artists
Theatre artists include performers such as actors, actresses, singers, dancers,
storytellers and acrobats. Since theatre is collaborative in nature, very often
theatre artists work together with other types of artists to achieve their theatrical
performance. These artists include fine artists, musicians and music composers
and designers and constructors of set/scene, sound, light, costumes, props and
make-ups. In order to collaborate fully and successfully, theatre artists need to
be acquainted with their rights and rights of others towards accomplishing their
artistic tasks. Theatre artists play a vital role in the socio-economic and political
development of the country. As among players who influence development, they
need to comprehend their rights and responsibilities as artists and members of the
community at large.
