communication has in theatre performances. The EVT can be used by theatre
professionals to promote cultural sensitivity and to enhance character dynamics,
emotional impact, develop suspense and block characters on stage as follows:

                (a) Cultural sensitivity: In productions that aim to represent different cultures,
understanding EVT is crucial. Directors and actors need to be aware of

cultural variations in nonverbal communication to avoid unintentional
                    misinterpretations or offenses.
                (b) Emotional impact: Strategic nonverbal expectancy violations can heighten
emotional impact of a performance. Unexpected gestures or facial
expressions can evoke stronger emotional responses from the audience,
                    making the performance more memorable.

                (c) Character dynamics: EVT can help actors portray complex character
relationships. For instance, a sudden violation of personal space can
signify an unexpected shift in a relationship, such as rising tension or a
                    breakthrough in intimacy.

                (d) Suspense: Directors and actors can use nonverbal expectancy violations to
create suspense or surprise. By deviating from expected nonverbal cues,
they can keep the audience on edge and more engaged with the narrative.
                (e) Blocking: Directors can use EVT to enhance the staging of a play. Strategic
placement and performers can create nonverbal violations that enhance
the story. For example, an unexpected invasion of a character’s personal
space can be used to signify aggression or intimacy.

                     Activity 6.5

Think of a theme of a play. Produce a mimetic play using elements found in
body language (postures, gestures and facial expressions).

            Principles of using body language

Body language is a universal mode of communication that is easily understood
by people across different cultures. Body language is one of the most easily
understood and the fastest way of communication amongst humans. It is a means
of communication that overcomes language barriers. Body language, as a device
for communicating messages effectively has its own principles. These principles
            are as follows:
