Other forms of visual language
Apart from the specific parts of the body that are used in language to enhance
communication of messages visually, there are visual elements that are used in
theatre performances. These include costumes, props, backdrops, and scenery.
Costumes
These are attires worn by performers during performance. Costumes are used
by the performer to simplify audience’s understanding of the character and
message. Colours and texture of costumes worn during performances are used
to communicate a message such as status, mood, time or wealth of the characters
being presented. For example, in Tanzanian context, black and white colours
may symbolise mourning and sympathetic event. Figure 6.7 shows a performer
in costumes.
