Theatre performance
Performance is a platform for communicating issues identified to other members
of a community. This is done in order to provoke their involvement in discussions
and actions. Prior to performance, facilitators and members of the community
should invite stakeholders, community leaders and whoever is thought to have

a role to play in the issues raised by people. Their presence will be helpful in
solving problems. The participants must consider a suitable venue and time that
will enhance community’s smooth participation in the event. During the opening
of performance, facilitators must explain the aim of the process and prepare the
audience for a fruitful discussion. The performance should be brief, interactive,
attractive and designed in a way that provokes the audience’s participation.
During the performance, performers should encourage the audience to contribute
either through dialogue or actions. Figure 1.3 shows spectators and performers
interacting during Theatre for Development performance.
