               Exercise 1.5

As a TfD facilitator, how would you make a follow up on the agreed
resolutions met during a Theatre for Development workshop so as to make
sure that they are being implemented for the betterment of the community

               concerned?

            Implementing suggested actions
This is a stage whereby implementing strategies are laid down. People are trained
into different skills they can adopt to solve problems. Even though there are
many strategies that can be applied, emphasis is put on having decisive measures
appropriate in solving the identified problems. Facilitators have to employ a
number of skills to convince, engage, and move development partners to take
actions towards improving people’s social situation. For instance, if a community
has scarcity of safe and clean water and it is also convinced to positively get
involved in the implementation of agreed plans, the action plan shall involve
getting funds, involving people in digging trenches and taking part in the
            installation of water pipes.

            Monitoring and evaluation
This is a process of tracking implementation of activities indicated in the action
plan. Although monitoring and evaluation are distinct sets of organizational
activities, the two are related. Monitoring is a systematic collection and analysis
of information while evaluation is a comparison of actual activity impact and
agreed plans. This stage is concerned with plans of a facilitation team, going
back to the community for assessment on how successful the workshop in
terms of attainment of desired social changes was. For instance, if one of the
issues addressed during Theatre for Development workshop was “shortage of
clean and safe water” and the authorities agreed and promised to work on it,
the workshop facilitators have to communicate with the task force or even go
back to the community and assess intervention progress. If the desired change
is not being worked through, then the facilitation team has to find out what is
halting the progress and advise the taskforce on how to keep things moving. With
or without funds, the facilitation team should continue with follow up until the
desired outcome has been realized. Table 1.3 is a sample of a detailed matrix for
            monitoring and evaluation.
