Introduction
Scriptwriting is the writers’ opportunity and exciting moment where they
get a chance to witness a story unfolding out of their own creativity. In this
chapter, you will learn the concept of script and scriptwriting, emergence
and development of scriptwriting, from a story to a script, elements of script
content and structure, elements of script formatting, screenplay, stage play
and radio play. The competencies developed will enable you to write scripts
for medium mentioned above effectively and successfully.

Concept of script and scriptwriting
A script is a written document outlining the dialogue, actions, settings, directions
and other instructions for guiding performers and production team to make actor’s
performance a reality on a chosen medium such as stage, radio or screen. Scripts
vary depending on the medium. A script meant for film or television drama is
named a screenplay. The one meant for stage performance is called a stage play
and a script meant for radio is well-known as radio play. Generally, scripts express
the primary imaginative vision or real-life experiences of a creative writer.
Scriptwriting is an art and craft of writing a script to guide crew and talent as they
work on a production of a stage play, radio play and screenplay. Writing a script
for stage, radio or screen, involves specific steps. The steps include thinking of the
idea, reflecting on the characteristics of the medium to be used to communicate
the intended message, creating characters, structuring a plot, outlining the world
