Crafting meaning
FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
Introduction
Crafting meaning involves the process of forming, using and interpreting
words in order to understand the meaning they are conveying. In this
chapter, you will guide students in learning how to form words, how to
pronounce words correctly, the importance of stress and intonation in
oral communication and how to interpret literal meanings of words and
sentences in various contexts. The competences developed in this chapter
will enable them to use different processes to form new words, pronounce
words correctly and interpret literal meanings effectively in English to
meet various communicative needs. They will also add vocabulary and
express ideas both orally and in writing.

Word formation
Teaching and learning procedures
The following procedures may be followed when introducing word
formation:
1. Guide students through brainstorming word formation. Ask them
questions such as what do they know about word formation, which
types of word formation processes do they know, how do they form
words when they communicate, how would communication be
without word formation processes etc.
2. Encourage them to engage in a discussion and check on their answers
and make correction where necessary. You can use some notes given
in the Student’s Book to guide their discussion.
