Experiment 3: Investigating the properties of water in its
gaseous state
Aim: To demonstrate the properties of water in a
gaseous state
Materials: Water, a saucepan, and a heat source
(stove), mirror and thermometer
Note: This activity should be carried out under
the supervision of the subject teacher or
laboratory technician.
Procedure
1. Pour water into the saucepan.
2. Turn on the stove, then place the saucepan with water on
the stove. Allow the water to boil.
3. Observe what you see as the water starts to boil.
4. Let the water boil for about 10 minutes. What do you
notice?
5. Hold a mirror above the steam rising from the boiling water.
What do you notice on the mirror?
6. Record your results.
Results
As the temperature rises to 100 °C, water boils and produces
water vapour, which is water in its gaseous state. Water vapour
