God also punished the Man. Because of him, the ground was cursed. He shall eat in
toil all the days of his life. The land shall bring for him thorns and thistles. He shall
eat plants of the field. He shall sweat to eat bread. He had to return to the dust (to die).

Figure 3.4: Man in the Garden of Eden
Adam named the woman Eve, meaning mother of all living. God made for them
skin garments and clothed them. In order that they may not eat the tree of life and
live longer, He sent them out of the Garden of Eden, to till the ground. In the east of
Eden, God placed cherubim and a flaming sword, which turned every way to guard
the way to the tree of life.
Generally, the fall of man brought about the following consequences. Painful death and
sufferings entered into human life. Sin and its aftermath was set in human history.
Besides, it led to loss of the original state of holiness and consequently, human nature
was wounded.
Symbolic representations in the Garden of Eden
According to Genesis 3 in the Garden of Eden there are terms used figuratively.
Such terms include Paradise, Adam and Eve, serpent, forbidden tree, nakedness
and hiding. Paradise stands for tranquility and harmony in creation. Adam and Eve
represent human beings. Serpent symbolises the devil while forbidden tree implies
limits of human freedom given by God. Nakedness symbolises early innocence and
vulnerability, and hiding symbolises shame and guilty.
