A storage facility for feed, tools, and veterinary supplies is also needed on the
farm to reduce delays in related services. A feed storage shed is used to keep
animal feed safe, dry and clean. It can store hay, straw, or other dry forage.
Concentrate feeds or mineral supplements must be stored in a separate area. Feed
storage space helps to prevent spoilage and protects feed from pests, dust and
moisture. Storage areas should be well ventilated and raised above the ground.
Feed storage must be close to the feeding area for easy access and use.
A milk room is another important structure. It is used to store, filter, and cool milk
before selling or processing. The room must be clean, closed, and easy to clean.
Milk must be protected from flies, dust and bad smells. A well-designed milk
room improves milk quality and supports hygiene. It also helps farmers to earn
better prices for good-quality or clean milk.
Manure management and waste disposal
A proper waste disposal system keeps the shed and animals clean and healthy.
Drainage channels help to direct liquid waste and wash water into a soak pit. Cow
dung must be collected every day and stored in a compost pit. The compost can
later be used to fertilise crops. Proper manure handling reduces disease, improves
hygiene, improves the quality of manure and helps the farm stay productive.
