          (h) Proper sanitation in livestock houses, facilities and equipment
          (i) Providing livestock with clean water and feed
          (j) Fencing or draining off swampy areas to isolate livestock from vectors
          (k) Inspection and thorough cooking of meat

          Activity 6.3
          Perform the following tasks:
          1. Visit a nearby abattoir and collect different types of internal parasites. Identify
them by their names and effects they cause to the animals then preserve them
              for future learning.

          2. Visit a nearby livestock farm, collect various livestock external parasites,
identify by their names and effects they cause to the animals. Explore methods
used to control them then preserve them for future learning.

          Integrated parasite management
This refers to a system which employs multiple approaches to control parasites
taking into consideration economic factors, resistance ability, production system

and management facilities that are in place.

          Example of integrated parasite management
The following is an example of a farm using integrated approaches in tick control.
The farm multiplies heifers which are sold to farmers. These heifers are grown
basically on pastures with little supplementation. They spend most of their time on
grazing which predisposes them to tick borne diseases. To control the tick-borne
diseases problem, two things are done:

          (a) Goats are taken to graze the area before the heifers. This is because goats are
less valued compared to heifers and they are resistant to tick borne diseases. For
that reason, they are taken to graze the areas before heifers.

          (b) The area is then burnt after being grazed by goats. Heifers will then be taken to
graze after the goats have grazed and the burning of the area has taken place.

So, the burning kills most of the parasites and the remaining eggs and larvae will
infest the goats which can be treated easily at low cost compared to heifers.
