One major problem caused by deforestation is climate change. Trees help to keep
the air clean by absorbing carbon dioxide. When too many trees are cut down, more
carbon dioxide remains in the air, contributing to increased temperature on the Earth.

This usually leads to droughts, stronger storms and changes in weather patterns.
Deforestation also destroys animal habitats and makes some species lose their food
sources and ultimately become endangered. Without forests, the land becomes dry
and weak, thereby becoming more susceptible to soil erosion. This makes it harder
for farmers to grow crops, leading to food shortages for both human beings and
animals.
People can prevent deforestation in many ways. One way is by planting new trees
to replace the ones that are cut down. Since paper is made from trees, another way
of preventing deforestation is to use less paper by resorting to electronic copies of
reading materials.
Additionally, the government can enact stringent laws to protect forests and
encourage stakeholders to use wood responsibly or to switch to electricity and gas
as cooking fuels.

In Activity 2, you compiled information by identifying key facts. Compiling
information involves collecting important details from different sources and
organising them. It helps you to understand better the topic you are studying and
present ideas neatly. We can extract information when reading books, articles,
or interviews by writing down key points in a particular order. Then, sort the
information into categories to make it readable. Sometimes, we use lists, tables,
or summaries to organise details. Competency in compiling information when
reading helps in writing reports, doing research, and sharing knowledge.
